You might be surprised by the needs of the person sitting next to you on the bus, in your classroom, or at the movies. Here’s how you can help.
Family Promise is a community-wide, interfaith program designed to provide families in crisis with a place to stay together as a family, and assistance in solving the underlying causes of their homelessness. Currently, there are over 850 homeless children in the William S. Hart School District, signaling an important need here in our local community. VUMC hosts families 4 – 5 weeks during the year. There are several ways to help during a hosting week:
- Dinner: deliver dinner to the church kitchen at 5:45 p.m.
- Dinner and Evening host, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.: eat dinner with the families and then spend the evening helping with homework, playing games, or sharing conversation
- Overnight host, 8:30 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.: spend the night at the church in a designated room in case the families need assistance, or in case of an emergency
- Donate necessary items for the families to use while they are our guests.
Next week: May 6-13.

The Santa Clarita Food Pantry and Help the Children are the local organizations that our church supports through the Communion Sunday Food Drive. The organizations provide supplemental food to the residents of Santa Clarita and have experienced a significant increase in individuals seeking assistance during the past year.
A list of current needs is included in the bulletin the week before Communion Sunday, which is the first Sunday of the month. The donated groceries are then brought to the hallway in Fellowship Hall that Sunday morning.
Bridge to Home
Bridge to Home provides support services – including an emergency winter shelter, case management, housing navigation, and medical clinics – that help individuals and families in the Santa Clarita Valley transition out of homelessness. Periodically, Valencia United Methodist Church assists with preparing and serving meals for Bridge to Home clients.
Bridge to Home has need of supplies to help them keep things running smoothly. If you would like to donate supplies, a list of those needed is here.
Feeding It Forward
We have a long history of feeding and helping people in need. In cooperation with other local faith communities who serve dinner Monday – Friday, VUMC provides a hot meal once a week during the late-spring and summer.
Volunteers provide and deliver dinner: a hot dish, salad/vegetables, side dish, and dessert to the location, and may simply drop the meal off or stay to help serve the clients.
Hill’s Angels – Youth Prison Ministry (on hiatus)
Help incarcerated youth at the LA County probation camps who are searching for redemption, direction and meaning.
Be Out There Sunday
One Sunday morning each year, we take the church out into the community to serve and assist local agencies, schools, and churches. Tasks include clean-up, painting, planting, minor repairs and more. Watch for our 2018 Be Out There date.
